Compression Therapy After Varicose Vein Treatment

Compression stockings are an important part of recovery after varicose vein treatment. Learn how compression therapy supports healing and how to use your stockings correctly.
March 2026

Compression therapy plays an important role in the management of varicose veins and is a key part of recovery after vein treatment.

Following your procedure with Dr Melanie Sung, you will be fitted with medical-grade compression stockings to wear after treatment. These stockings help support circulation in the legs, reduce swelling and bruising, and assist the healing process.

Wearing compression stockings as instructed can significantly improve comfort after treatment and support optimal treatment outcomes.

What Do Compression Stockings Do?

Compression stockings are specially designed garments that apply graduated pressure to the legs.

Graduated compression means that the stockings are:

  • Tightest at the ankle
  • Slightly less tight through the calf
  • Gradually less compressive higher up the leg

This pressure pattern helps encourage blood flow upward toward the heart and reduces the pooling of blood in the leg veins.

Compression stockings help to:

  • Reduce bruising and swelling after treatment
  • Improve blood circulation in the legs
  • Support healing of treated veins
  • Reduce discomfort or aching following vein procedures

They also assist in reducing pressure within the deeper veins of the leg, which can improve overall circulation and comfort.

Compression Stockings After Vein Treatment

As part of your vein treatment plan, our team will measure your legs and fit you with the correct size compression stockings. Proper fit is important to ensure the stockings provide the correct level of compression.

You will also be shown how to correctly put on and remove your stockings.

Following most vein procedures, we recommend wearing your compression stockings 24 hours per day for at least two weeks, unless your doctor advises otherwise.

Activity After Vein Treatment

Staying active after treatment is an important part of recovery.

We recommend walking at least 45 minutes each day while wearing your compression stockings. Walking helps promote healthy blood circulation in the legs and can reduce pressure in the treated veins.

Regular walking can also help ease aching or discomfort that sometimes occurs after treatment and may reduce the risk of complications.

Tips for Putting On Compression Stockings

Compression stockings can feel tight when first putting them on. The following tips may help make them easier to use:

  • Consider using a stocking aid device such as EzyAs
  • Wear washing-up gloves to improve grip and prevent tearing the fabric
  • Ensure your legs are completely dry before putting the stockings on
  • Applying a small amount of talcum powder may help the stocking slide on more easily
  • Use the silk foot insert if one was provided with your stockings

Tips for Managing Leg Swelling

If you are wearing compression stockings to help manage swelling in the legs, the following routine may help improve comfort:

  • Put your compression stockings on before getting out of bed in the morning, when swelling is minimal
  • Keep a fresh pair of stockings beside your bed so they are easy to access
  • Shower or bathe at night before going to bed, allowing the legs to rest overnight
