Leg symptoms are a medical issue, not a cosmetic one
Heavy legs at the end of the day. Ankles that swell by evening. Aching, throbbing or restless legs at night. Most people put these down to age, standing all day, or a long week — and live with them for years.
They are often signs of underlying vein disease. It is common, it is progressive if untreated, and it is usually straightforward to assess with an ultrasound.
Does any of this sound familiar?
- Heavy, aching or tired legs, worse by the end of the day
- Swelling around the ankles by evening
- Visible, bulging or twisted veins
- Restless legs at night, or night cramps
- Itching, dryness or skin discolouration around the ankle
- Spider veins spreading across the thigh or calf
Why R Clinic
We treat the cause, not just what you can see. Varicose veins are usually a surface sign of deeper vein disease. We assess the whole venous system and treat the underlying problem, because treating only the visible veins is why veins come back.
Non-surgical, walk in walk out. Our treatments are performed in our Belconnen clinic. No hospital stay, no general anaesthetic, and most people return to work and normal activity straight away.
No long wait. Non-surgical treatment avoids the waiting times associated with a hospital vascular surgery referral. You are assessed, planned and treated locally.
Long-term care, locally. We are a Canberra service, so your follow-up ultrasounds and ongoing vascular surveillance happen here — not as a one-off procedure and goodbye.
Our Comprehensive Patient Experience
Your first appointment is a comprehensive vein assessment with our vein doctor. Allow 90 minutes.
This is a full diagnostic workup, not a look-and-see. It includes a duplex ultrasound scan performed and reported by a sonographer who specialises in vascular imaging, which maps how the blood is actually flowing through your legs and identifies where the valves have failed. Almost all varicose veins are caused by a problem deeper than the veins you can see, and the scan is the only way to find it.
Your doctor then talks you through what the scan found, what it means, and what your options are.
- Full medical history and symptom assessment with our doctor
- Physical examination of both legs
- Duplex venous ultrasound, reported by a vascular sonographer
- Findings explained in plain language
- Doctor consultation and vascular ultrasound are Medicare rebateable
- Your complimentary medical-grade compression stockings, professionally fitted
You leave your consultation knowing exactly what is recommended, what it involves and what it costs. Nothing is quoted before we have scanned your legs – a plan built without imaging is guesswork.
Your plan is individual. Two people with similar-looking legs often need different treatments, because what matters is which veins are failing and how far the disease has progressed. Most plans combine treatments: one to close the underlying vein, another to clear the surface veins it was feeding, and compression to support recovery.
- A detailed written plan based on your ultrasound findings and your doctor’s assessment
- Full quote at consultation, including Medicare and health fund considerations
- Every option explained, including where no treatment is the right answer
- Time to think it over. Nothing is booked on the day unless you want it to be
Treatments are performed in our fully equipped Belconnen clinic. No hospital, no general anaesthetic, no overnight stay. Most people walk out and return to normal activity the same day.
Every stage is monitored. Ultrasound guidance is used during the procedures that require it, so your doctor is watching the vein respond in real time rather than working blind. If your legs respond differently to expectations, the plan is adjusted.
- Non-surgical, walk in walk out, performed in clinic
- Ultrasound-guided where clinically indicated
- Progress reviewed at each stage and the plan adjusted as needed
- Compression therapy forms part of your recovery
- Clear aftercare instructions, and someone to call if you have questions
Treatment is not the end of the process. Venous insufficiency is a long-term condition, so we review your progress and keep monitoring your vascular health afterwards.
Follow-up duplex ultrasound confirms the treated veins have closed properly and stayed closed. Ongoing surveillance means any new areas of reflux are picked up while they are still simple to treat, rather than years later once symptoms have returned.
Because we are a Canberra service, this happens here, with the team who treated you.
- Post-procedure review with your doctor
- Follow-up duplex ultrasound to confirm treatment success
- Ongoing vascular surveillance, so recurrence is caught early
- Advice on compression, activity and prevention
